International Relations Theory : A Critical Introduction 5th edition

It also deconstructs each theory allowing students not only to understand them, but also to critically engage with the assumptions and myths that underpin them. It shows how critical international relations (IR) theory functions as a broad-based and diverse critique of society. The chapters explore key new areas of research, including critical emotion and critical animal studies and draws on Marxist, poststructuralist, feminist, realist and post-colonial backgrounds to frame this research. The course aims to introduce the key assumptions of the international relations theory as a part of social science and as an analytic tool, focusing on the problems of war and peace, foreign policy decision-making, etc.

Introduction In the introduction of her book “IR Theory,” Cynthia Weber elaborates what International Relations is in a broader and wholesome context. She uses mainly three sub-headings in her introductory paragraphs namely Culture, Ideology, and myth function in IR theory. Critical international relations theory is a diverse set of schools of thought in international relations that have criticized the theoretical, meta-theoretical and/or political status quo, both in IR theory and in international politics more broadly – from positivist as well as postpositivist positions. Positivist critiques include Marxist and neo-Marxist approaches and certain strands of social constructivism.
